Ice hockey stars tuck in to “Sub of the North” taste test

June 25th, 2009

Players from the Newcastle Vipers Ice Hockey team tucked into the top 10 sandwich entries designed by local people as they helped to decide what will be crowned ‘Sub of the North’.

A North East Feast, Big Belta, Talk of the Toona and The Sub Way-Aye were amongst the top 10 sandwich designs that the three Vipers player’s put to the test.

Hungry North Easterners have put their favourite sub ingredients forward for the chance to win £1000 as part of a SUBWAY® competition. ‘Sub of the North’ has seen local people design their favourite sandwich and give it a North East theme.

Ice Hockey giants David Longstaff, Ben Campbell and Nathan Salem tasted each of the sandwiches and will now vote for their favourite on the official Sub of the North website, which lists the top 10 ‘entries, where members of the public can also vote to decide the winner.

Newcastle Vipers captain David Longstaff said: “The Sub of the North’ sandwiches entries all tasted fantastic, I am torn between the Northern Spice and the Bad Lads Salami. It was also good to see that there was a section of healthy choices.

“I cannot wait to see which one will be crowned Sub of the North, as I’ll be first in the queue to get it!”

The winning sub will be announced at the end of June and be sold at all 55 SUBWAY® stores in the region, with the winner presented with a cheque for £1000.

Vipers coach outlines remaining roster plans

June 24th, 2009

Hot on the heels of Matic Kralj’s signing, Newcastle Vipers head coach Rob Wilson has given VipersHockey.co.uk his outline of the remaining roster spots ahead of the 2009-10 Elite League season.

Wilson is in Canada working on the recruitment of the ‘all new’ Vipers squad, where four of the six imports signed are brand new to the UK.

“When I spoke to the Fan Forum at the Hilton Hotel I promised a fresh approach and a clean slate as far as the imports were concerned,” said Wilson.

“And the fans can see I have followed through on that, with only Mark Gouett and Todd Griffith coming back from last year, and the other guys being brand new to the League.

“With the four import spots left, the guys in the frame fit that bill too, so it truly is an all-new Vipers lineup.”

The four import spaces are 1 forward, 1 goalie and 2 defencemen.  There is also likely to be another British defenceman added to the roster.

“I have an offer out with the forward and am waiting for a response,” continued Wilson.

“The two defencemen have been identified and we have had initial discussions, which are ongoing.  I have also agreed to sign a British defenceman, and once the contract is signed details will be announced.”

Wilson has always said his most important signing is between the pipes, and last year’s netminding hero Andrew Verner is almost certain to move back to Europe.

“I would love nothing more than to have Verns in goal for me again next season, but he’s had offers from Europe which we can’t even come close to.  As I said at the Forum, Andrew is in the point of his career where he needs to make as much as he can before he retires.”

The news that a new import forward has been offered a contract means that Jeff Hutchins and Andre Payette will not be returning next season.

“I spoke to Jeff and made an offer but he didn’t agree with the deal, so I moved on to my next target.  He did a great job for me last year when he came back, and won over a lot of the fans.  I wish him well in whatever he does next and thank him for his efforts in two spells as a player for me.

“Andre has been a huge part of the organisation for the last four years, and was a big part of our early success.  He has worked hard on and off the ice for the club, and especially for the Vipers Foundation.

“So again, it’s a big thank you to Andre for his four years’ service to the Vipers cause, but but it’s right I feel now to move on to new things.

“There are still a couple of clubs I believe are interested in signing him, so we may still see him on the ice next season.”

WIlson’s new recruitment plan has seen the average age of the team come down, while the speed and skill has increased.  The calibre of players available to the Head Coach is in no small part down to the involvement for a second season of Northumbria University.

“There’s no way I would be able to sign the likes of Tejchma, Berry and Marhle without having the University programme as part of our offer,” said Wilson.

“Another couple of the guys we’re talking to will be on the school programme too, and the same applies to them - ordinarily they would be out of our range if it were down to straight finance.

“Northumbria have been outstanding last year and so far this summer in helping the players get onto the courses they want to do.

“It’s been easier getting guys to sign up having the bonus of a Masters to help them after hockey, so I extend a big thank you to everyone at Northumbria.”

VipersHockey.co.uk will bring you all the news throughout the summer as the final pieces of the recruitment puzzle fall into place.  Fans are also urged to check out our Facebook and Twitter pages, where news and sneak previews are posted.

I want the season to start now - Tejchma

June 24th, 2009

Jason Tejchma (pronounced Teach-ma) spoke with VipersHockey this week, you can hear the full interview by clicking the play button below.

The forward said he took the advice of former Belfast stars Bobby Robins and Andrew Martin - both of them team-mates of Jason at University - before signing for the Vipers, and he was looking forward to taking his Masters to add to his Accounting & Finance degree.

“I’m not sure how much longer I can play hockey, so I have to have something to fall back on,” he said.

Tejchma was also pleased to be playing alongside Mike Berry once again; the pair were at Mississippi last season.

Thanks to Jason for giving the interview, which was recorded by Patrick Smyth of UK Hockey Live.  We hope to have more audio from the Vipers throughout the summer, and ongoing during the new season.

Derek Campbell Signs for Coventry

June 24th, 2009

Laconic forward Derek Campbell has joined Newcastle’s Elite League rivals Coventry Blaze, it has emerged today.

The Canadian winger became a fan favourite in his two seasons as a Viper, but was not offered a deal for 2009-10 as coach Rob Wilson undertook a complete rebuild of the team.

Now, after rejecting offers from Europe, Campbell has signed up with Paul Thompson’s Coventry outfit for the new season and will come up against the new-look Vipers, adding more heat to an already spicy rivalry.

A club spokesman said today: “The Vipers would like to place on record our thanks to Derek for his contribution in the two seasons he wore the Vipers jersey, and we wish him well at Coventry.

“Derek had an excellent first season in Newcastle, but it’s fair to say he didn’t have the impact we were looking for last season.

“Newcastle Vipers have been clear from the end of last season that we would be heading in a different direction with our recruitment, so perhaps it’s best for both parties.

“We are sure our supporters will give Derek a great reception when he comes back to Tyneside with the Blaze, right up until the puck drops at least!”

The rebuilding of the squad continued this week with the signing of Slovenian winger Matic Kralj, the fourth import who is brand new to the UK.

Kralj can be a hit, says Wilson

June 23rd, 2009

Slovenian forward Matic Kralj will swap Maribor in the Slovenian League for Tyneside and a spot on the Newcastle Vipers 2009-10 roster, the club have confirmed today, and his new coach has backed him to make an impact in the Elite League.

The 26-year-old winger starred in his native country last season, racking up 65 points from 34 league games as HK Maribor finished runners up in the League standings.  Kralj was ranked second in scoring in the League.

A product of the Olympia Ljubljana system, the 6ft 200lbs forward also spent five seasons in North America in the Central Hockey League, posting 85 goals and 120 assists with three CHL clubs.

Kralj returned to Europe in 2007, and last year posted career high in goals, assists and penalty minutes for Maribor, 23 goals and 42 assists while adding 93 penalty minutes.

Coach Rob Wilson told VipersHockey today: “Matic was on the radar of a couple of other UK clubs, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to get his signature.

“He has shown throughout his career that he can put up the numbers in the goals column, but he also plays hard and isn’t afraid to do the dirty work in front of the net and in the corners.

“Having taken references from players and coaches, I think the best comparison I can make is Matus Petricko.  Like Petricko, Matic has good size and uses it to his advantage, and he also knows where the goal is.

“I think he can be a fan favourite in Newcastle.”

Kralj will arrive in Newcastle on 23 August at the start of Vipers’ two week training camp, which includes an exhibition game against Sheffield Steelers on 30 August at Metro Radio Arena, and another game away to Elite League opposition.

Coach Wilson is close to landing the offensive defencemen he wants to complete the blueline import quota.
