6ft 3in defenceman/forward Blair Stayzer is Danny Stewart's first import signing for the Newcastle Vipers.
The Ontario native was drafted by Calgary Flames in the 1999 draft, and played in the AHL for St John Flames in 2001-2. The 29-year-old is a veteran of ten seasons in the North American minor leagues, most recently in the IHL with Fort Wayne Komets.
The no-nonsense Stayzer - who describes his own playing style as "crash and bang" - weighs in at 225lbs and fits into the mould of players that coach Danny Stewart is looking to bring to Newcastle.
"Blair is the perfect fit for the Newcastle Vipers," said coach Stewart today.
"He is a character guy, plays a hard nosed style and competes every single night. He isn't afraid to defend himself or his teammates against anyone.
"He has added versatility in that he can play forward and defence, and will play in all situations whether on the penalty kill or the powerplay.
"Blair will bring us toughness on the back end with the ability to move the puck which is crucial to our transition game.
"I will be looking at Blair to be one of our leaders, and he is a great presence in the dressing room."
Stewart indicated that Stayzer will be his number four defenceman, with the option of playing as forward in special team situations.
Blair Stayzer will arrive on Tyneside in late August ahead of the VIpers' Elite League campaign which gets underway in September.
Blair's shirt sponsorship is now available from the Vipers office, priced at £400 for the home or away shirt, and £200 for the warm up shirt. Supporters interested in sponsorship should contact Jaimie Longmuir via email office@vipershockey.co.uk or jaimie.longmuir@vipershockey.co.uk.
