Giants 4 Vipers 1

Saturday, January 31st, 2009
Giants moved into second spot in the standings, seeing off Vipers in the first of the back to back games between the two teams at the Odyssey in what was a tousy affair throughout. 155 penalty minutes were dished out by referee Moray Hanson, including 63 alone to Giants’ recent signing Jason Rushton, who was involved in no fewer than three fights with Vipers’ Andre Payette.

The first bout between the two was at 3.44 but it was Giants first on the scoreboard when Tyler Howells (12th goal of the season) fired home at 7.36. A powerplay strike by Mike Burgoyne (10th) at 10.31 saw Giants 2-0 ahead, the situation at the end of the first period.

The home side added a third goal at 23.24 via the stick of player/coach Steve Thornton (12th) to put them firmly in control with the visitors struggling to get much in the way of offence going at the other end. Round two between Rushton and Payette also featured at 34.34.

Vipers finally made a breakthrough when Chris McAllister (2nd) netted at 46.23 but any faint hopes of a comeback were dashed when Andrew Martin (13th) of Giants found the net shorthanded at 50.51 to shoot the home side 4-1 ahead.

An ugly finish inside the final minute saw Rushton and Payette get involved again and ended with the former ejected on a 2+5+10+game, along with Vipers Derek Campbell for third man in, then with two seconds remaining a coming together between Giants’ David Phillips and Vipers’ Dean Holland saw the latter also thrown out on a 2+5+10+game.

Round two….of the game….. tomorrow…………expect more fireworks?

MASSIVE INJURY BLOW

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

It is with regret that the Mincoffs Vipers can confirm that due to the severe nature of the injury sustained in September against this weeks opponents the Belfast Giants, defenseman Burt Henderson will not ice again this season.

Vipers GM Jaimie Longmuir commented “We are extremely disappointed by the news not only for ourselves but also for Burt who was keen to return to the ice this season. We received confirmation from the specialist yesterday that despite the rehab that the severity of the injury was too much to hope for a return this season.”

Head Coach Rob Wilson speaking this morning “I am extremely disappointed with the loss of Burt as he was solid defensively and was our strongest defenseman going forward. We have missed his offensive threat all season.”

Burt was a massive loss for the club early in the season and we have missed him throughout. Unfortunately the extent of the injury was too much to overcome. We wish Burt and his family all the best for the future and hope Burt has a full recovery.

Weekly round up from the Elite League: Ice Chips

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
Little change in the standings over the past weekend with a couple of teams jostling for position behind leaders Sheffield Steelers, who still lead the chasing pack now by seven points.

However, their are now two teams eight points adrift but both have a couple of games in hand, so this competition is still very much up for grabs over the coming weeks.

Steelers regained their winning habit over the weekend with a solid home win against slumping Manchester Phoenix by 5-3, helped by a treble by Brad Cruikshank and then a 4-0 win in Hull, with goaltender Jody Lehman picking up a 25 shot shutout for an EIHL leading sixth of the season so far.

Still holding on to second spot are Nottingham Panthers, who picked up a convincing 7-1 win on the road at bottom club Basingstoke on Saturday but then went down 3-2 at home to struggling Hull in one of the shock results of the season to date - and that after leading 2-0 earlier in the game.

Perhaps more dangerous to Steelers at present are Belfast giants and Coventry Blaze. These are the teams with a couple of games in hand and both seem to be teams willing and able to make a late push at the Steelers position at the summit of the standings.

Giants are having a real purple patch right now and are scoring at will.  After dumping Coventry out of the British Knockout Cup during the week they went to Manchester on Sunday and hammered the home side 8-2 thanks to a 6-0 third period blitz and a treble by Paul Deniset.  Blaze made a couple of changes to their roster over the past week and dividends were instant as Blake Forsyth and Erik Hjalmarsson steadied the ship and helped Blaze to an 7-3 home win over Newcastle and then a 5-3 come-from-behind win in Edinburgh with GB star Jonathan Weaver scoring 2+1 in both games.

The other game of the weekend saw Cardiff and Newcastle put up the shutters, or should we say both goaltenders Peter Aubry (Devils - 32 shots) and Andrew Verner (Vipers - 48 shots) did that to great effect, so much so that 65 minutes of hockey saw no goals scored by either side, the game only being settled by a penalty shot winner by Jay Latulippe. An interesting one that as Latulippe, before Sunday, had been the singularly least successful player in the whole league in shootouts having gone 0 from 10 beforehand!

That’s that particular monkey off his back now though!!

In addition to players previously mentioned above the following guys did well over the weekend:-

Tony Hand of Manchester 2+1 during the loss in Sheffield
Brendan Cook of Nottingham also 2+1 in Basingstoke
David Phillips and Bobby Robins of Belfast both 1+3 during the big road win in Manchester

Player of the Week time now and this week we ask Konstantin Kalmikov of the Hull Stingrays to skate forward. The 3-2 road win in Nottingham really was an unexpected success for his side and scoring twice as his team came from behind including a penalty shot winner with less than two minutes remaining makes him a worthy winner in our eyes.

Vipers pair get All-Star nod

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Mincoff Vipers goalie Andrew Verner and defenceman Jez Lundin have been named in the North team for the Elite League All Star Game.

North All Stars - Verner and Lundin

The inaugural event, presented in association with Planet Ice, takes place at the Coventry Skydome on Thursday February 19 (7.30pm) and tickets are on sale now from the Skydome.  Tickets are £15 for adults, £7 for under 16s, £10 for concessions.  A family ticket (2 adults, 2 under 16s) is £38.

Coach for the North All Stars is the Sheffield playcaller Dave Matsos, and he can select from Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle.  Each team will supply two imports and two Brits to form a 20-man squad.

Matsos’ opposite number is Coventry’s Paul Thompson, who will choose the squad for the Southern All Stars.

Verner has been stellar between the pipes for Newcastle this season, most recently posting a 48-shot shutout in Cardiff, his third shutout of the season.

Lundin was picked for the GB team earlier in the season before injury prevented him taking up the slot.  He has continued his development on the Vipers’ blueline this season and continues to figure in Paul Thompson’s international plans.

A Vipers club spokesman said: “Andrew and Jez are fully deserving of their All-Star call up, and will represent the North and Newcastle with pride.

“Verns has lived up to his billing when he arrived and has been acknowledged by coaches around the League as one of if not the best stopper in the League.

“Jez continues to grow and develop as a top-four defenceman in the Elite League, and the All Star game is surely just a stepping stone to further representative honours.”

Devils 0 Vipers 0 (Devils win on PS)

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Vipers’ goalies past and present were the stars as the Newcastle club played out their first ever scoreless game on Sunday.

48 saves on Sunday for Andrew Verner

48 saves on Sunday for Andrew Verner

In  the end the teams were only separated by the 12th penalty shot, netted past Andrew Verner by Jay Latulippe.

The home side certainly had the bulk of the play in the opening period, including a full two minute 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity and outshot their opponents by 19 to 8 but to no avail. The middle session was more even but remained goalless and although Devils had slightly the better of the thirds period and overtime the respective offences simply could find no way through the impressive backstops of each side.

Into the shootout where after the original round of three shots both Tyson Teplitsky of Devils and Rob Wilson of Vipers found the net, leading on to  sudden death where with the twelth shot of the game Latulippe  fired home to give the home side the extra point.

Blaze 7 Vipers 3

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

A stunning middle period blitz from the Coventry Blaze overturned an early Vipers lead, as the defending champions bounced back to form.

It had been the VIpers who had taken early control and led 2-0 thanks to goals by Likit Andersson (3rd) after only 38 seconds and Derek Campbell (12th) at 8.57 before Blaze hit back through Adam Calder (26th) at 10.08 but Vipers held their lead until the period break.

It all went horribly wrong for the visitors as Blaze made the game theirs taking the period by 5-0. Carlyle Lewis (13th) started the rout at 24.02 and further strikes came from Tom Watkins (3rd) 30.16, Calder (27th) 34.12, a powerplay effort by Jonathan Weaver (15th) at 37.33 and then Barrie Moore (16th) at 39.44.

Damage limitations for Vipers in the third period but they did score first as Campbell (13th) netted his second at 45.13. However, Blaze were in no mood to ease off and at 52.52 Weaver (16th) added his second of the game shooting past back up goaltender Richie Lawson to end the scoring.
